In this article, I present to you a curated selection of the most prestigious Yarra Valley wedding venues that stretch from Dixons Creek, to Healesville, through to Warburton, each offering an unparalleled level of elegance, sophistication, and personalised service. Each and every one of these locations I have personally photographed at, so I have experienced them first hand. Prepare to be captivated by these remarkable destinations that will elevate your special day to new heights of grandeur.

How to choose a Yarra Valley Venue

Consider the guest experience

Think about the travel time for guests and family, accommodation for guests as some of these venues are quite isolated, where to get ready, transport and logistics. Click here for a list of the Yarra Valley’s best wedding accommodation providers (opens in new tab).

Matching the venue to your wedding style

  • A vineyard → relaxed and scenic

  • Estate → elegant and timeless

  • Venue → Contemporary, sophisticated

Ceremony and Reception Options

Many of these of these venue, if not all, have an all in one package to have everything onsite to make ease of logistics and flow for the day.

Photography Opportunities

Look for venues with views of open landscapes, greenery, natural light and varied backdrops suitable for all seasons. Having photographed hundreds of weddings in the Yarra Valley in all seasons and weather conditions, I can be your guide and unbiased information source for each and every venue listed here.

Not only you can have your photo session in the hand crafted gardens out the back and the front of Projekt, but you are less than 15 minutes to multiple photo locations in Warburton, including the mystical Redwoods Forest, Redwood Bridge and the Viaduct. I do encourage doing a first look and photo session offsite first, then you can party all night after your ceremony without having to leave the venue itself.

The lovely owners Mark and Sandi will look after you from the get go. Their passion for the quirky weddings shine through and you are truly in perfect hands for a LGBTQIA+ friendly shindig.

V. Bulong Estate

Nestled amidst rolling hills and breathtaking vineyards of Yarra Junction, the family owned Bulong Estate offers a romantic and intimate setting for your wedding day, ideal if you want something slightly more on the smaller side. Whether you choose an outdoor ceremony under the dappled shade of ancient trees or an indoor reception overlooking the vineyard, Bulong Estate promises a day that is relaxed and easy. Explore their offerings on their website.

Due to the close proximity to car park and power access, this property is ideal for Food Trucks and dessert carts.

A family run establishment, the personal touch and passion is evident. I am quite the regular here as I am on the supplier referral list and on page one when you search the venue + wedding.

For a real wedding hosted at Bulong Estate, check out Eleanor and Sam’s, Jaimee & Alex’s, then Casey & Jon’s Wedding.

Pro Tips!

  • Perfect for smaller guest lists

  • The sunset time here is not the actually sunset as it is set in an east facing hillside, so it’s easy to have first looks or photo sessions before your ceremony, especially in winter

The properties’ popularity is exploding, so get in fast! This is mainly because they have spent big money lately in updates for a more highend look and guest experience. With a great onsite catering kitchen, they can put you in touch with all the best food suppliers in the area. For a look at a real wedding, check out Bianca & Aaron’s wedding. or Steph and Brad’s

Pro Tips!

  • The sunset time isn’t really the actual sunset time due to the elevation below the hills to the west. Speak to your coordinator to time this correctly with your reception formalities. The dusk shots down by the dam are stunning if you are prepared for a small walk

  • If your guests are collectively staying at one hotel, you can charter a bus to ferry them back and forth. Get in touch with the venue for recommendations

  • The dance floor is off to the side of the reception, so some thought might be needed to shift the crowd from their seats. A professional MC is the best fit for this task

VII. Dominique Portet Wines

Ninth-generation winemaker Dominique Portet chose the cool climate of aptly named Coldstream in the Yarra Valley as home to the eponymous winery he founded in 2000.

Now son Ben, heads the winemaking team, firmly observing the central tenets of this young yet historic estate: respect for tradition, understanding of site and an open mind towards contemporary practices that shape wines that are ever more refined and delicious.

Even though they are somewhat new to hosting weddings, I feel this is an up and coming winery to host beautiful and intimate weddings with gorgeous surrounds. Their interior is sophisticated, service impeccable and you have acres of space for your photos. Their food is unreal too! Check out their website for more information and to reach out.

IX. Swallowfield Vineyards

Surrounded by rolling vineyards and breathtaking wide open landscapes spread over 150 acres, Swallowfield Vineyards in Gembrook (around 80-90 minutes from Melbourne) is a truly idyllic setting for your wedding day. This boutique family owned winery offers a tranquil atmosphere and a sense of intimacy that is perfect for romantic celebrations.

Whether you envision an outdoor ceremony with a forest backdrop or in the expansive gardens followed by a cosy reception in their rustic barn, Swallowfield Vineyards is the blank DIY canvas you need to create an unforgettable experience for you and your guests. Having a yarn with the owner Phil is worth the price admission on its own. Visit their website to learn more.

For a more detailed look at a wedding hosted at Swallowfield Vineyards click here. Perfect venue for DIY, food trucks and external caterers

Pro Tips!

  • Most of the best photography spots are within walking distance of the barn. Phil will be persistent in taking you around in his car, but if you both photo and video, the car gets a bit too cramped with gear and half your photo time is taken up with driving. If you want some really off the beaten track shots you could take him up on the offer.

  • There isn’t an obvious horizon when it comes to sunset due the surrounding forests, but there are some stunning grassy fields to the north of the barn and a hill of vines to the south (Clarify with Phil about seasonal entry to the vineyards as sometimes they are off limits)

X. Alowyn Gardens

If you have always dreamed of a wedding surrounded by stunningly curated gardens, Alowyn Gardens is the venue for you. Established in 1997, this enchanting location features beautiful landscaped gardens, charming gazebos, and close to the heart of Yarra Glen. With its magical ambiance and attention to detail, Alowyn Gardens provides a romantic backdrop for your special day. Each part of the property gives a different feel due to the plantations there with multiple locations for photo opportunities.

Host either just your ceremony or your entire day with the ability to DIY the look and feel you desire. There are not many locations in Victoria that can offer this level of beauty, especially in the spring and autumn months.  Discover more about this magical venue by visiting their website.

You can book a ceremony only package only if you desire to have your reception elsewhere, but also you can DIY a full outdoor reception which is amazing in late spring through to early autumn.

For a look at a full wedding, see Melissa and Trent’s sun soaked day here. In the rain, you still can have magical pictures like Ebony & Lance did.

Pro Tips!

  • There is an enclosed private space on the property to do final touches to outfits, store items etc

  • While it is an open air venue, there is that risk of rain. Under the wisteria tunnel it actually reduces the rain’s impact. Note some of the back paths do get very waterlogged after heavy storms

  • Plenty of locations for photos so allocate at least an hour for that and is best later in the afternoon

  • All the getting ready locations and accommodations are pretty much the same as above being 5-10 minutes from Yarra Glen and Dixon’s Creek

Be sure to fully utilise the extensive photo opportunities at Alowyn Gardens, including the Tuscan Garden featured here at the back of the property

Best Time of Year for a Yarra Valley Wedding

Spring (Sept–Nov)

  • Lush greenery and blooming gardens

  • Ideal for outdoor ceremonies

  • Vineyards start to grow from their winter slumber

  • Climate moderately warm days, weather varied with long golden hours

Summer (Dec–Feb)

  • Long daylight hours with dusk stretching to beyond 9pm at times

  • Golden sunsets for photography

  • Oppotunity to have a dedicated sunset photo session during your reception to have a breather from the party and formalaties

  • Climate, warm to hot, weather almost entirely dry for long periods

Autumn (Mar–May)

  • Rich vineyard colours (reds, oranges, yellows)

  • One of the most popular seasons as the vines are often at their most density

  • Climate cool mid teens in May to low 20s. Risk of rain is higher

  • Late mid April until early May is the most desirable for colored trees before the winter fall

Winter (Jun–Aug)

  • Moody, atmospheric landscapes

  • Perfect for intimate weddings

  • Nearly all venues do an off peak rate on both venue hire and catering (I do as well)

  • Early sunsets, mostly cloudy and temperature ranges from 8-17deg

  • Be sure to have a wet weather option, or at least keep it indoors to keep warm

A Photographer’s Perspective

The Yarra Valley is a special place, I have visited wine regions in Northern Vic, Southern NSW, Bellarine Peninsula, Mornington Peninsula, Western Australia (Margaret River) and all over Italy and Southern France. It has some of the most photogenic landscapes in Victoria, views for days, unique weather systems and stunning golden hours.

Venues with:

  • Layered landscapes

  • Uninterrupted views

  • Well curated gardens

Give the most timeless photographs and all of the above offer top tier service for your wedding day experience.

There are a few more stellar wedding venues in the Yarra Valley, despite my extensive history I haven’t seen them all. Here are a few honorable mentions of venues I’d like to photograph at. If these ones are your list, I am willing to offer a special rate.

Hubert Estate - Coldstream

Re-em at Helen & Joey Estate - Gruyere

Levantine Hill - Coldstream

Coombe - Coldstream

Riverlea Estate - Warrandyte

Pietro Gallus Estate - Warrandyte

Boat O’Craigo - Healesville

Vines of the Yarra Valley - Coldstream

FAQs

  • Yarra Valley Venue costs range from a couple of thousand dollars for venue hire plus your per head catering costs. The per head costs range from around $100pp to sometimes $300pp for the more premium properties. Minimum spends range from about $10,000 and can stretch up to and beyond $50,000.

  • Getting to the Yarra Valley isn’t a huge hurdle, it is getting home for the guests that is often plagued with lack of transport options. Guests are encouraged to pre book any transport early to avoid being stranded in a town with no train station, limited accommodation options and isolated from suburbia (so no Ubers on demand).

  • The Yarra Valley is approximately 1-1.5 hours drive from Melbourne. Warrandyte being the closest to the city and Healesville being the furthest. It is always encouraged to have accommodation sorted locally and pre booked transport such as a chauffeured vehicle, or chartered bus to a central location or hotel.

  • Many Yarra Valley venues do have onsite accommodation or they often partner with options nearby (sometimes nextdoor). Before you book your wedding, do enquire with them the range of options and capacity.

  • The best season for a wedding in the Yarra Valley is usually autumn as the trees have colour in them, the temperatures are mild and the vines are at their fullest. This is balanced by Spring where you have the spring flower blossoms and green grasses from winter rain.

  • Yes, many venues and wineries offer off peak and weekday discounts (just like I do). That’s because demand is lower, wages are cheaper and helps cash flow through the quieter periods.

As you embark on this exciting journey to find the perfect Yarra Valley wedding venue, let the beauty of these remarkable locations inspire your imagination when it comes to designing your very own day. Each venue on this curated list offers a unique experience, reflecting the diverse tastes and desires of discerning couples like you. Whether you choose a vineyard estate, a modern-chic venue, or a garden oasis, rest assured that your wedding day will be an exquisite reflection of your love story. So, go ahead and explore these luxurious Yarra Valley wedding venues, where dreams come true and memories are made that will last a lifetime.

Remember, as you plan your special day, the right wedding photographer can capture the essence of every moment, allowing you to relive the magic for years to come. Marcel Van der Horst Photographer, with his 18 years of experience can guide you through the whole process and offer the best advice for timing of your day, locations and connecting you to the area’s best suppliers.
